Eldercare Advisor Sharon Oakes
Sharon Oakes was born in Philadelphia and then moved to Panama, FL. Her dad was in the military so growing up they moved all over the United States. 10 years ago her mother needed an assisted living facility to help her adjust to life after losing one of her legs. The experience of trying to find a place to help her and that she could afford was an eye opener. It was very difficult working a fulltime job and raising 3 children as a single parent.
Sharon has her Bachelors from Hayward State College in Child Development. Graduate work at Purdue University. Sharon has been a Social Worker for 44 years with non profits, working with a suicide and crisis center, rape victims, alcoholics and addicts, child protective services (25 years) and the last 8 years with Covenant Hospice. She is also an active volunteer with Big Brothers and Sisters, as well as Covenant Hospice and Alzheimer’s Services.
Working with Hospice provided Sharon with the knowledge of the different assisted living options available to seniors. She jumped at the chance of working with Assisted Living Locators because as both a social worker and a senior she could help individuals find a "home" where they could actually age in place.
